Flora Beltz

Flora's Story -

I was six years old when my dad told me that he wasn’t going to live us anymore. I was devastated. My sister Delores was five and my brother Richard was two.We went to live with our grandparents. My mom had to find a job. My dad didn’t pay any child support. I was angry and unforgiving of my dad.

We lived with my grandparents until I was twelve years old. My grandparents were unable to take care of us any longer. At that time my mom and dad made the decision that we would go to the Mt Vernon Methodist Children’s Home. We lived there until I was sixteen years old. We went to live with my mom and finished high school. We also attended the First Methodist Church of Mt Vernon.

I was eighteen years old when my dad asked me to come to Chicago and visit him. I didn’t want to go but I knew I had to face him with my anger. It took several visits before I could forgive him.

While there I met Jack and we got married. We were married for forty-five years and had three children Mary, Jack Jr, and Patricia. Jack died of cancer in 2001. I sold my house and moved in with Mary and her husband George. I knew there was something missing in my life. George and I discussed finding a good church where we could go and worship God. George and I visited two different churches and we decided to go to Larkin Avenue Baptist Church in Elgin.

We had a meeting with Pastor Sanders where he prayed with me and I asked God to forgive of my sins and he did. God promised us if we confess our sins to him he would forgive us. I became a member of the church and was baptized in 2007.
